The grilled sandwich is well-known and easy snack. Most common is the grilled ham-and-cheese sandwich. You can create endless variations using different ingredients. All you need is a simple toaster oven or sandwich maker. In this article we'll explore the history of the grilled sandwich and provide you with a few recipes.
A little bit of history
The first grilled sandwich was a single slice of bread, topped with cheese. It originated in the United States of America in the 1820s. It wasn't until the 1960s a top slice of bread was added to create the grilled sandwich as it is known today all over the world.
Hawaian grilled sandwich
Ingredients
- 2 slices of bread
- tomato ketchup (or another dressing of your liking)
- 1 slice of cheese
- 1 slice of ham
- 1 slice of pineapple (canned or fresh)
Directions
Put the cheese, ham and pineapple in between the two slices of bread. Place in the toaster oven or sandwich maker and wait until golden brown and well-heated.
Grilled salmon sandwich
Ingredients
- 2 slices of bread
- 100 gram of smoked salmon
- lemon juice
- 1 or 2 teaspoons of mustard
Directions
Cover the bottem slice of bread with the salmon and sprinkle with a couple of drops of lemon juice. Spread some mustard on the salmon and cover with the second slice of bread. Place in the toaster oven or sandwich maker and wait until golden brown and well-heated.
Grilled sandwich with salami and cheese
Ingredients
- 2 slices of bread (preferably brown bread)
- (young) cheese
- thinly sliced salami
Directions
Cover the bottom slice of bread with cheese and the thinly sliced salami. Cover with the second slice of bread. Put the sandwich in the toaster oven or sandwich maker until golden brown.
Grilled sandwich with goat cheese, honey and tomato
Ingredients
- 2 slices of bread
- goat cheese
- sliced tomato
- honey
Directions
Cover the bottom slice of bread with goat cheese and tomato. Drizzle some honey over the tomato and cover with the second slice of bread. Put the sandwich in the toaster oven or sandwich maker until golden brown.
Turkish grilled sandwich
Ingredients
- pita bread
- cheese
- 2 slices of bacon
Directions
Put the cheese inside the pita bread and place in the oven. Fry up the bacon in a frying pan. Remove the sandwich from the oven when the cheese is melted and add the bacon.
Italian grilled sandwich
Ingredients
- 2 slices of bread
- 1 tablespoon of green or red pesto
- sliced tomato
- sliced mozzarella cheese
- 4 slices of salami
Directions
Cover the bottom slice of bread with mozzarella. Then stack it with 2 slices of salami, tomato and the other 2 slices of salami. Finish with another layer of mozzarella and the second slice of bread. Compress the sandwich lightly with your hand. Toast until golden brown and cut diagonally so you get two triangles.
Tips
- If you don't like it when your sandwich is well-toasted, put a slice of bread in between your grilled sandwich and the sandwich maker. This way your sandwich will not get golden brown.
- If you spread some butter on top of the sandwich before putting it in the toaster oven or sandwich maker, the grilled sandwich will have an even more beautiful golden color.
