A hamburger is a fried piece of flattened beef that is usually eaten between two pieces of bread. Often the hamburger is dressed with lettuce and ketchup.

History

In the 19th century German emigrants from the district of Hamburg took the hamburger to America. The hamburgeer than became a famous treat and the fried piece of meet got the name Hamburger steak. For quite some time mister Salisbury promoted the hamburger intensely and that is why in 1900 the piece of meat  was named after him. In some restaurants you can still get a Salisbury Steak.

In Amercica every different fast food restaurant has a different story on how the hamburger as we know it today was invented an by whom. Probably it was mister J. Walter Anderson who gave the hamburger its current shape. In the little town Winchita, Texas mister Anderson started the White Castle Hamburger company.

In the 1930’s Wimpy Gills started a KETEN of fastfood restaurants across America. After that the hamburger gained more and more popularity. Wimpy Grills was also the first company to trie to conquer Europe with its hamburgers. This was before Mc Donald’s and Burger King.

After World War II the hamburger defeated the hot dog, pizza slice and the fried chicken and from that moment on many varieties on the hamburger were invented. Because the Americans had no knowledge of the history of the hamburger they thought the word was made up from the words ham and burger. And as a variety on that other burgers were invented, like the cheeseburger, fishburger, baconburger and so on. Today even vegan burgers excist, with not one piece of meat.

Types

Besides the well known hamburger there are a lot of varieties to this greasy snack. A short summon:

  • Hamburger. The most well known piece of fried meat between two halfs of a bread bun. Usually served with lettuce and maynaise and/or ketchup.
  • Cheeseburger. There are two types of cheeseburgers: The first one is actually simply a hamburger, with a slice of cheese on top of the meat. The second one is a crusty piece of fried cheese, served between two halfs of a bread bun.
  • Chickenburger. This burger is made of a fried piece of chicken instead of beef meat.
  • Baconburger. This is usually just like a hamburger, only with a slice of bacon on top of the meat.
  • Fishburger. There are many types of fishburgers because of the many species of fish that can be used. Fish burgers are made of a fried piece of fish with crust on two halfs of a bread bun.

All these burgers usually are served with a lot of sauce like ketchup, musterd, mayonaise or curry. Also the lettuce is barely ever forgotten.
