A waffle is a light, flat pastry, made with milk, eggs, flour and sugar. After baking it in a waffle iron, the waffle has a different shape with diamonds in it, the 'diamond pattern'.
History
A long time ago, people baked their cakes on stones. Later they did it on a plate of iron. Even later on and still now we bake the waffles between two iron plates. It goes much faster like this, because baking takes place on both sides. Around 1200 a blacksmith invented a new mold to bake with. He made pits in an iron plate. These plates printed a diamond-shaped drawing in the cake, which looked like a honeycomb. From then on the word 'waffle' arose. It is an old French word and means "honeycomb".
Types
There are different types of waffles and all of them are prepared diffently. Although they taste different, they all have the 'diamond pattern'. Here are some types of waffles:
Liege waffle
Usually prepared with the following ingredients: butter, egg yolks, powdered sugar, sugar candy, flour, cinnamon and milk.
Brussels waffle
These waffles are made with: butter, flour, eggs, milk, salt, vanilla sugar.
Treacle waffle
These contain cane sugar, butter, eggs, milk, flour, cinnamon, salt and the treacle: cane sugar, butter.
Waffle
A 'normal' waffle can be prepared in many ways. In general this authentic waffle contains milk, eggs, butter and flour or self-raising flour.
All of the above mentioned types are made with a waffle iron. This iron makes the waffles get their diamond pattern. And because of that people recognize the waffle.
Recipes
Below you will find a recipe for treacle waffles. A waffle iron is required to be present.
Ingredients:
for the waffles:
0,66 lb of cane sugar
0,99 lb of butter
3 eggs
3 tablespoons of milk
1,32 lb of flour
cinnamon
salt
for the treacle:
1,32 lb of cane sugar
0,66 lb of butter
Preparation
Mix the sugar with the eggs, milk, flour, cinnamon, salt and slices of butter . Make 12 little balls of it. Preheat the waffle iron. Press a dough ball into the iron and bake the waffle for about 30 seconds. Use the remaining cane sugar and butter to make the treacle. Mix this with the butter and heat the sugar in a saucepan until it becomes a thick mass. Keep stirring so the sugar does not burn! Cut the waffle in half with a knife and cover both sides with the treacle. Fold the sides together and let the waffles cool down or eat them warm.
